Meet Michael Taplin

About Michael

I grew up in Edwardsville and now proudly call Glen Carbon home. My family’s roots in District 7 run deep, as my three siblings and I all graduated from Edwardsville High School. Growing up here taught me the importance of hard work, integrity, and giving back. Through our schools, community organizations, and local events, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the people and places that make the D7 community such a special place to live.

I graduated from Edwardsville High School in 2018 before earning my bachelor’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications from the University of Mississippi. My time in college broadened my perspective, challenged me to think critically, and strengthened the leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that continue to guide me both personally and professionally.

Today, I work as a Product Marketing Manager, where I lead the company’s business-to-consumer (B2C) marketing strategy. I manage digital marketing campaigns, oversee budgets, analyze performance data, and develop initiatives that drive customer engagement and business growth. My work has taught me the importance of thoughtful planning, collaboration, fiscal responsibility, and making decisions based on data.

Giving back to my community has always been important to me. I currently serve on the District 7 Equity Advisory Committee, where I work alongside educators, administrators, parents, and fellow community members to discuss opportunities and challenges facing our schools. I also previously served as Public Relations Officer for the Edwardsville Art Center, helping promote programs and events that brought people together through the arts.

Outside of work and community service, my partner and I enjoy supporting local businesses, attending community events, and spending time outdoors with our two dogs, Kip and Cash. Whether we’re exploring local parks, visiting neighborhood restaurants, or participating in community activities, we appreciate everything that makes the Edwardsville–Glen Carbon area such a wonderful place to call home.

I believe leadership begins with listening, treating people with respect, and earning trust through action. Those values have shaped my personal and professional life, and they continue to guide my commitment to serving the community that has given so much to my family and me.

District 7 invested in me from an early age through speech therapy, dedicated teachers, and a great public education. Those experiences helped shape the person I am today, and I want to give back to the schools and community that gave me so much. I’m running to help ensure every student has the same opportunities to succeed while protecting the strong reputation our district has built.

Because I genuinely care about this district and the people who call it home. I chose to build my life here because I believe in this community and its future. I’ll bring thoughtful leadership, a willingness to listen, and a commitment to making decisions that put students first, support our educators, and use taxpayer dollars responsibly. My goal is simple: leave District 7 stronger than I found it.

Fresh perspectives and new ideas are important for any organization. While I’m early in my career, I’ve built experience leading strategic initiatives, managing budgets, and solving complex problems in the private sector. Combined with my lifelong connection to District 7 and service on the District 7 Equity Advisory Committee, I believe I’m ready to help shape the district’s future.

My priorities are expanding academic support for students who need it, recruiting and retaining outstanding teachers and staff, providing high-quality curriculum with flexibility for educators, ensuring responsible financial stewardship, and advocating for increased state funding while keeping District 7 accountable to the community it serves.

I’ll be a collaborative, thoughtful, and transparent leader who listens first, asks questions, and works to build consensus. My goal isn’t to bring politics into our schools—it’s to support students, empower educators, strengthen public trust, and help District 7 continue providing an exceptional education for every student.
